A history
steeped in tradition and excellence
Over forty years of tradition and a legacy of excellence has shaped our Highland Belles into a one-of-a-kind, award-winning drill team – year over year.

“However, after being on a dance team in college, being in a sorority, all of it, there is nothing quite like Belles. Nothing compares to the unique traditions and experience here.”
Maddy Basso ~ Lieutenant 2017, 2018
About The Belles
The Highland Belles are Highland Park High School’s award-winning drill team, known for their tradition of excellence, discipline, and spirit. With a legacy built on precision, performance, and leadership, the Belles are a proud representation of HP’s commitment to teamwork and school pride.
The Belles are selected through an intense, professionally-judged tryout process that ensures the team is built on merit, not numbers. Throughout the year, the Belles perform a variety of routines including military, jazz, pom, high kick, and more—at football games, pep rallies, and basketball games. The team also competes each year at regional and national competitions and have won the prestigious Overall Select Grand Champion and Extra-Large Kick National Championship awards.
Under the direction of former Kilgore Rangerette Mrs. Shannon Phillips, the Belles continue to grow while honoring their rich history. Though dance styles have evolved, the heart of the Belles remains the same: tradition, excellence, and Highland Park pride.

Our History
The Highland Belles were founded in 1983 by a group of Highland Park High School students and visionary director Cathy Wheat, also a former Kilgore Rangerette. Despite early skepticism from parts of the school community, Mrs. Wheat’s commitment to excellence, discipline, and tradition helped establish a team that would go on to become one of Texas’ most respected drill teams.
The first team of 33 charter members performed at the Blue vs. Gold spring football game in 1983 and quickly won over the school with their talent and spirit. That fall, the now-iconic blue and gold “Fringe” uniforms were introduced and received overwhelming support. The commitment and dedication of the Highland Belles founding members has led to a long-standing program marked by precision, pride, and performance excellence.

Traditions and Legacy
Over the years, rich traditions have been woven into the fabric of the Belles—from “Big Sis/Lil Sis” mentorships to game day “Lucky Fringe” rituals and the beloved Spaghetti Supper fundraiser. Student leadership plays a key role through Lieutenants and Service Officers, who guide the team in both performance and spirit.
The Highland Belles Booster Club, formed in 1984, is a nonprofit organization run by Belle parents. It raises funds to support uniforms, travel, competition fees, and team events—most notably through the annual Spaghetti Supper and online auction, which serves over 500 guests each fall.
From humble beginnings to national recognition, the Highland Belles have become a cornerstone of Highland Park tradition and excellence. Their impact extends far beyond the field—serving as role models for younger girls in the community and preserving a legacy built on hard work, spirit, and Scot Pride.
